Mabel C. Daggett

Mabel C. Daggett was the first woman published in the Times as a constructor. Her first puzzle in the Times appeared on March 8, 1942, only the fourth crossword published by the Times. She followed it up with another in June of that year. At this time, she was already an established constructor, having debuted in 1927 in the New York Herald Tribune and been published in several outlets thereafter, according to a feature article about her.

Mabel Cornelia Daggett was born in 1873 in Parishville, NY. Her family moved to Elmira, NY when she was a child. She graduated from Elmira College in 1896. She was a French teacher. She taught for several years at her high school alma mater in Elmira and then moved to Brooklyn, where she taught for over 20 years. She retired from teaching in 1938. She passed away in 1955 at age 81.
