The downward countdown numbers have to be added to Across answers to fit the clues. For example, 1-Across is TEN + TDRESS. etc.

This 1998 puzzle by Charles Deber had the same title but a much different execution.

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

BY ROBERT FROST

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Today's puzzle is edited by Joel Fagliano. It's the first time since Nov. 20, 1993, that the editor byline has not said Will Shortz. Well, nearly:

The decimal expansion of pi goes on forever, so you can never write it out exactly, but here are the first million digits.

In this Schrödinger puzzle, 69-Across can be read as THE NORTHEAST, THE NORTHWEST, THE SOUTHEAST, or THE SOUTHWEST, depending on which referring clue you're looking at. The Down answers fit the Down clues for every combination.

Note that each of those referring answers is in its appropriate corner of the grid.
