I have stacks and stacks of scribbled theme ideas, the vast majority of which never become puzzles. Most of those sit around for years until for no particular reason, one of them beckons. Such was the case for my notion of "human nature."
My original thought was things like MOUTH OF THE RIVER, EYE OF THE STORM, NECK OF THE WOODS. But I couldn't get a symmetrical set that would work. So I switched gears and ended up with the shortish answers and rather unusual grid you see here.
It seems the majority of clues were my own, with some of the changes clearly meant to make them easier. Yes, it's Monday.
OMG, I was just reminded that this is my 100th NYT crossword. That means a lot of years have flown by! I'm constructing far fewer puzzles these days, but as I've said before, it remains a great alternative to cleaning or shopping or decluttering.

It's been a little over a year since I submitted this puzzle. I do remember trying out umpteen grids with various theme possibilities before settling on this one. Hitting on MAGENTA for the middle was a big help. I wanted all the "double" words to be embedded in other words and phrases rather than standing alone. For example, I wouldn't have used something like FBI AGENT or DATE PALM.
I hope you're all having a fun holiday season!

The vagaries of English are always fun to play around with. Way back when, it seemed popular to publish puzzles with rhyming words: theme answers like TRAFFIC LIGHT, PRIZE FIGHT, STAGE RIGHT. In coming up with rhymes, I always found it more interesting when the spellings were different.
"Clean coal" as an answer gave me a slight pause because it's debatable whether there is such a thing. My original clue included something of a hedge ("Dubious term for a greener energy source"), but the editing team didn't think that was needed. Actually, there weren't many clue changes overall. It helped with clue-writing to know that this would definitely be slated for a Monday.

For a good while I'd had the idea to do something with "to be or not to be," in the sense of "two B's or not two B's." I'd wanted to find two phrases where B's were inserted in a word and two where B's were removed. But removing B's and being left with anything remotely sensible proved unlikely, and the whole thing languished.
But … a strange thing happened. One night just after going to bed, Hamlet's words came into my head—who knows why— and suddenly, I thought of a different approach. "To be or not to be" didn't have to mean two B's vs. no B's. It could mean two B's vs. one B. A true epiphany!
Immediately I thought of HABIT/RABBIT, but there really aren't many pairs that could work. There was ROBIN and BOBBIN, but BOBBIN doesn't yield anything puzzle-worthy. Clearly, the spellings and pronunciations had to be the same. Not DOUBLE/BUBBLE or RUBLE/RUBBLE. I was extremely lucky that the two pairs in the puzzle worked out both with symmetry and with having the one-B answer coming before the two-B answer.
I didn't figure this as a Monday, so Will et al. eased up on a number of the clues. The one that caught my attention was at 53-A, "What the Supremes said to do …" as the clue for STOP. LOL, you can be sure that's not from me. Being hopelessly ignorant about most pop culture, a reference like that would never, ever cross my mind.
This was a fun puzzle for me finally to work out. As always, I hope it's fun to solve.

Whenever I would come across the word "cardamom," I saw it in my head as "card a mom." And since I'm always on the lookout for puzzle themes, it eventually dawned on me to look for other examples of words with an "a" in the middle that could be similarly reparsed.
And interestingly, it was that seed entry that Will & Company questioned after I submitted the puzzle this past November, saying the pronunciation was a bit off with the slight change to a schwa sound in the last syllable. My only substitute was SPAMALOT, which they felt was already a sort-of pun. Anyway, they then decided that CARDAMOM was okay after all, and accepted the puzzle as is.
I hadn't found a lot of possibilities. The only other one I remember is MANATEE.
I probably pegged this as a Tuesday. Even so, most of the clues remain intact. Those long clues at 53- and 62-Down were Will's.

Not a whole lot to say about the puzzle — a pretty common theme type. I think what elevates it somewhat is the lost-and-found element, which came to me only after starting the grid.
True story. Just last weekend my husband and I were leaving the house when we both saw that our front door keys were missing from our keychains. We mainly go through the garage, not the front door, but still …. We looked in the obvious places to no avail. For months we'd procrastinated about making an extra key, and now we didn't even have one. Would we need a locksmith to come put in a new lock? Well, needless to say, I found both keys. And then this puzzle pops up. Very timely.

I think it was BILLFOLDS that got me started on this one. But really, I find there's an embarrassment of riches when it comes to using people's names for puzzle themes. The stumbling block here was finding a second 9-letter option, so the idea sat around until I finally came up with VANGUARDS. The puzzle was submitted roughly a year ago. I don't see any especially noteworthy clue changes.
As always, I hope it's a fun one. Hurray for puzzles to keep us all occupied, these days more than ever.

I'm having a hard time remembering much about the construction of this one, which was in June of 2019. I have no recollection of what prompted the idea. However, I think I tried all sorts of combinations and permutations of possible answers and various grids. I see I ended up with something of an unusual one, with that black square in the middle separating two 7-letter answers.
And I'm not seeing any particularly noteworthy clue changes, for better or worse. Sometimes, though, I have to laugh when there's a clue I absolutely don't recognize and then discover it was my own. This was the case for 51-Down. I saw "Bored of the Rings" and had no memory of it whatsoever. It turned out to be exactly what I'd written.

This puzzle sprang from a totally different idea, which had sat around forever and ever. I'd jotted down SHOOTING STAR as an answer for John Wayne, thinking I'd use other nonhuman phrases that could apply to real people. I never got anywhere with it. Then one day, coming across my "shooting star" note for the umpteenth time, I suddenly wondered if maybe there were other stars that would work. Right away I decided that ANNIE OAKLEY was a better fit than John Wayne, and from there it was a piece of cake.
I do remember trying to fit in a dog star like Rin Tin Tin or Lassie, but to no avail. I submitted this pretty recently, in early December. And I'm rather amazed to see mighty few clue changes. I guess the crossword stars were finally aligned!

This idea sat around for years until I finally tackled it the weekend I had to miss the ACPT this past spring. I figured I might as well work on a puzzle.
At first, I tried to put STAR-CROSSED across the middle and got absolutely nowhere. Finally, the lightbulb went off, and I realized I could cross it, appropriately enough. But then finding "star" words that crossed proved harder than I would have thought. There had to be four longish entries and four short ones, and I wanted to make sure there were different kinds of stars without totally repeating any. Like, I wouldn't use both FILM and MOVIE, or MORNING and EVENING. And I couldn't use anything too technical that no one ever heard of. I do remember having to abandon some more interesting choices (for example, FREE-FOR-ALL, instead of LEAST OF ALL, would not work), as well as being stuck with the likes of SOLIDER.
Sometimes we just have to give in.

I was wondering about a word or phrase I could break up as the beginnings of theme answers—which I don't remember doing before—and RUMPELSTILTSKIN is what immediately popped into my head. It came out of nowhere but seemed perfect, being the answer to a riddle-type question that could serve as a revealer. The crossword gods were definitely smiling.
The main construction issue was deciding where the breaks would come, with RUM- or RUMP- having to be 11 letters for symmetry's sake. I wasn't real thrilled with PELICAN STATE, but it must have worked out the best.
I had fun with this one and was happy with the way it turned out. I hope it's a fun solve.

I'm a sucker for quirks of English, so a puzzle was clearly in the cards when I noticed there are several stand-alone, differently spelled "do" rhymes. I think it was only when starting the grid that I thought of PAS DE DEUX, which purists will complain isn't quite the same pronunciation. For me, close enough. I would have loved to use DERRING-DO, but it just didn't work.
Nothing much to say about clues. They're mostly what I submitted, or at least the gist of what I submitted. Changes seemed generally to make them a bit easier. The 65-Across clue for ONE was definitely Will's. And he must have nixed my attempt to include a Monday question-mark clue at 7-D, with [Person going to court?] for WOOER.
I hope you all DO enjoy the puzzle.

This had to be the fastest acceptance of all time. I snail-mailed the puzzle on a Friday and got an email back on Monday!! I couldn't believe it had even gotten there already. Will said he wanted to use it for a Monday, but I'd written Tuesdayish clues. So he asked me to suggest easier clues for some of the answers. He also said he was concerned that my clue for MAKE PASSES was awfully harsh, and he asked me to soften it. So the clue was changed to what you see today, from my original [… invite a sexual harassment charge].
As is very often the case, this idea simmered for many moons before I could come up with a final themer to balance DRAW A BLANK. I wasn't really thrilled with MAKE PASSES, but at some point you have to just throw in the towel and go with something.
Will did ease up slightly more than I did on the clues, but overall they're not far different from my revised version. A clue he didn't change was the one for AKA. I hadn't expected that to survive!

This was an exceedingly rare, once-in-a-blue-moon puzzle for me: Once the phrase "go first" popped into my head, the theme idea and all four theme entries were a done deal within, say,15 minutes. And within an hour, the grid was finished. That just never happens.
I submitted the puzzle close to a year ago, without the circles. I thought the revealer would make everything obvious enough without them, and that people would have a nicer aha moment by seeing it on their own. But yeah, it's Monday.
Only a pair of clue changes to note—the Michael Jackson ones at 11- and 12-Down. I could never have written them, never having heard of the song. But then, you all probably knew that!

This was an idea that came together fairly quickly once it occurred to me. But it did undergo one major transformation. The obvious first thought was to have small, medium, and large in phrases going down, with the downsizing revealer as the final, fourth entry. But then MUMBO JUMBO came to mind and was too perfect to disregard. That left the revealer for the spot where you find it now.
The grid constraint was that I wanted the size words to go sequentially down the grid as well as just being down entries. Which meant finding answers and placing them such that each keyword was lower than the previous one.
The turnaround on this puzzle was astoundingly fast. I sent it in at the tail end of October and got an acceptance email on January 10. And here it is still January. Maybe a record.
In looking this over, I can see I made some compromises. LASSI, ESSES, and ET ALII, as well as good old IDI, would not be my pick of fill. But that was the best I could do without changing the basic grid design.
Will did make one teeny grid change. At 7-Across, I had BMI rather than TGI. Most clues were unchanged. As I looked them over, I did pause at the one he substituted for PARK, thinking, What the heck is PRNDL? I had to laugh at that one.

I doubt that "hit" puzzles are all that original, so I was mildly surprised when this was accepted, back in April. And I was totally surprised to learn last week that it would be running on Christmas Day. Hitting someone doesn't seem like a Christmasy theme!
I think it was noticing Lucy's last name that inspired this. Van Pelt was a must-use answer, even with the sort-of extra word in there. Deciding on the theme answers made me realize the multitude of words — clock, paste, and belt being just a few — that can be used in this vein.
I didn't notice any significant changes to the clues, so the puzzle you worked is pretty much the one I submitted.
Peace and good will to all this holiday season, and here's to lots of good solving in 2018.

LYNN: This collaboration was something of a blind date set up by Will, and it was all done via email. We both decided from Day One that the theme would be comedians, but it took a while to get from there to this puzzle. At first we thought of using names like (Lucille) BALL, (Bob) HOPE, and (Chris) ROCK that could be used in everyday phrases—and we batted around some possibilities. We also considered a few ideas that included revealers.
But then, among ideas for those themes, Joy included PRYOR COMMITMENT … and I knew immediately that she'd come up with something different and perfect. She'd found our theme angle for sure, and her example was even 15 letters for a terrific central grid-spanner. After emailing back and forth, we decided on this set. Three of the five themers (PRINZE, PRYOR, and IDLE) were Joy's ideas, and all but one of the theme clues were hers (all but BARR). Unfortunately, BARR HOPPING didn't fit. A few names that didn't work were Chaplin/chaplain, Marx/marks, and Bee/be.
I did the grid, which Joy approved. And I wrote clues that she then went through and edited, preferring to make them more challenging. Will changed very few of them. If you guessed that Joy wrote the great clue for GO APE, you'd be right. Also the ones for RESCUE DOG and HELIX, just to name two that I especially liked.
Working on this with Joy was great fun. Her emails were guaranteed to include some funny choices I never would have thought of. I loved the way the puzzle turned out. I hope all of you solvers do, too.

I don't remember what sparked this puzzle. I do remember consulting the dictionary to check the proper spelling for each written-out letter.
Most of my clues seem to have survived intact. I don't notice any major changes, though my clue for BEE STUDENT referenced someone in the annual Scripps-Howard tournament, and my TEE BILL clue was in relation to a pro shop rather than a souvenir shop.
I submitted this in mid-August, so it hasn't been languishing too terribly long. As always, I hope you enjoy it.

The idea for this puzzle languished for years. I could never decide if it was good, or uninspired. Then, if I looked at it for the umpteenth time, I couldn't decide which ideas were the best to use. I might like one choice for a symmetrical pair, but be lukewarm about the other one.
Finally, this fall, I emailed a friend here who I know does Sunday NYT puzzles, and asked her what she thought. She started bugging me to do this. And here you have the result.
I was amazed how fast it went from submission to publication. I mailed this in early December and it was accepted in mid-January.
Probably the genesis of this puzzle was somehow reading "Colorado" as "color ado." That would make PUEBLO COLORADO into something like [Big fuss over how to paint the Indian village]. I still like that, but was afraid it wouldn't pass muster since "Colorado" actually comes from the Spanish word for "color", and thus the meanings wouldn't change.
I would have preferred more answers that divided the words in unusual ways, like MARSHALL PLAN, which I liked [Spec for an interplanetary campus building?] or MADEIRA WINE, which in the end seemed kind of blah [Aged a glassful for Mr. Glass?]. A few others that got left out were RAMBLING ROSE [The price went up on some flashy NFL jewelry?], TAKE A PLACEBO ["Park yourself somewhere," to a onetime White House pet?] (I wasn't sure whether that qualified as an "in the language" phrase), and GOLF CADDIES [Headline for the obit of a country club scoundrel?]. If the current grid hadn't worked out well enough, I would have gone back and tried other options.
As for clues, mine remained intact for the most part. I think that Will's changes, overall, tended to make things a bit easier; for example, the clues for MALE and ORANGES—both sort of gimmes--were his. And I would never have come up with that clue for MOTH—totally not in my wheelhouse. All the theme clues were basically the ones I wrote except for UNFUNDED MANDATES. I think I'm reading Will's revised clue a bit differently than he intends, because it seems somewhat off to me. (Mine had been "Watching TV on Saturday nights with a cash-strapped beau?")
Oh, and one last thing for all of you who wonder about clue-grid duplications. Looking at the preview copy, I happened to notice that Will changed the ELMO clue to read "Kids' TV character …" when KIDDIE LIT was fairly nearby in the grid. His response:
"I think bloggers accord way too much importance to this sort of thing, which average solvers don't give a hoot about. My rule is: No answer word in its entirety can be part of a clue, and no clue in its entirety can be part of an answer. But in most cases, partial to partial duplication, as in this puzzle, doesn't matter."
Anyway, I hope you had fun with this. That's the whole point.

After coming up with the idea for this one, I found acceptable examples surprisingly hard to find. There were plenty of phrases with two R's and two D's, but I was being picky here: the first word had to have exactly two R's and no D's; and the second word had to have exactly two D's with no R's.
This was one of the rare puzzles I had to redo. The deal-breaker was the theme entry BROTHER ODD, the title of a Dean Koontz book and a recurring character in his novels. I hadn't been real happy with that, but clued it with reference to a "strange" name, hoping to give a major hint to the "odd" part. But Will thought it was too obscure…and it was back to the drawing board. I can't find the original puzzle, but the change to this version was the inclusion of NARROWLY DEFINED in the middle, which I wasn't exactly thrilled with either.
I will have to get busy because I'm pretty sure this is my last puzzle in the NYT hopper. I need a big influx of both ideas and time!

Maybe I've finally gotten the message about writing sufficiently easy clues, because this puzzle is hardly changed from what I submitted. Yes, there were a few slight rewordings and a few rewrites—but nothing I'd consider significant.
Once I realized that "fool around" had good crossword potential, I was happy to find four reasonably common phrases that worked—and mostly for words of five letters (i.e., not too short, like ASS or OAF).
I sent in this puzzle just before Christmas, so it's been in the queue less than six months. You never know how long it will take. I hope you had fun fooling around with this one.

There are so many ways to play around with people's names. That's obviously not original as far as crossword themes go, but as long as it's fun it passes muster for me. I think what inspired this one was "playwright." A word or phrase you've seen a zillion times suddenly takes on new meaning--and voilà! Here it became a matter of finding compound words where the first part could be a verb and the second part could be a recognizable name.
I sent this to Will in September, so it hasn't been languishing for very long. And I can report that there weren't many clue changes, with none I'd consider significant. The theme clues are all word for word as I submitted them—which is not always the case! I hope you all enjoy it.

Hmm, I can't think of much to say about this one. I have no idea anymore what prompted me to consider the revealer phrase as potential puzzle fodder. But once I did, it was relatively easy to find words and phrases that fit the pattern. Create the grid, and voila, done! Well, obviously not quite. Still those clues to be written.
It goes without saying that Will changed some of them, but I didn't notice anything major. In general, for a Monday, his clues ease things up a bit.
Looking at the grid now — nine months after submitting it — I do remember pondering whether ROMANESQUE was Monday-OK. Getting the Q in there was not a factor — actually, it was the only darn thing that would work.
Only thing left was to solve the puzzle, and for that, of course, it's up to you!

I think it was WALK AROUND that got this one started, when I somehow saw the phrase as walking a round of golf. Then came the realization that there are quite a few adverbs of this sort starting with the letter "a" that can be parsed as "a something-or-other." So I was off and running. Some puzzles almost create themselves — without brain-twisting efforts to come up with theme answers — and this was one of them.
Definitely Will's biggest change was in the clue for 25A. I never once thought of a lav connection. My clue was [Sketch some ideas for one's self-portrait?]. And for 51A, I was thinking along the lines of moving a product in the sense of selling it. So my clue for that one was [Sell lots of fries?].
As I've said here before, I know I tend toward Tuesday clueing in Monday puzzles. Easy is fine and I do aim for it, but I rebel against blatantly dead giveaways. So for HOUR at 16A, I submitted the simple and admittedly boring [Happy ___], which Will changed to "One of 24 in a day." Otherwise, this was probably a typical mix of my clues and Will's.
The puzzle was submitted exactly a year ago. I hope you've enjoyed it.

I can't come up with a whole lot to say about this one, which I submitted almost exactly a year ago. Maybe I was specifically thinking about a word to "hide" in a puzzle — with Carmen Sandiego being out of the running! Or maybe the idea just came out of the blue, who knows. Regardless, I played with various letter combinations that seemed like possible candidates for answers, making sure that all of the letter sequences were different. And voila, a puzzle was born.
No clue changes stand out particularly. Some are slight rewordings, and others seem roughly parallel, like "Loathe" instead of my "Abominate" for HATE, or "Breathe hard, as after running" to replace "Gasp for breath" for PANT. For the COLD WATER clue, I do like "What may be poured on a bad idea" as opposed to my more pedestrian "Wash cycle option." On the other hand, my FALSIES and WIG clues survived intact. I mean, what else was I to do with falsies for a Monday?
When Will accepted the puzzle, he said he might leave off the circles, which surprised me because other times he's added them in. But as you can see, the circles remained so Waldo is perhaps disguised if not quite hiding here (I'd used "camouflaged" in the clue). Much easier to spot than in those books!

It's often hard to remember what actually triggered a puzzle. In this case, I think I was pondering "crossings," like RR crossings — which didn't seem to have much of a future. But PED looked promising, and here is the result. My serendipity moment came with cluing the center revealer, when I hit on the link between the PEDXINGs being at corners and at corner locations in the puzzle. It was submitted in August of 2013.
Will made a slight grid change. I'd submitted the puzzle with INTEL at 31D and SCADS at 32D. And not surprisingly, he changed a fair number of clues. I usually balk at too-obvious gimmes (like Will's "Where China and India are" for ASIA at 14A), so my clues probably tend toward Tuesdayish. I'll try to mend my ways with future submissions.
My only quibble with a clue change is for SALE at 58D. As I write this the week before Christmas with sale inserts spilling out of the paper, "Post-Christmas store event" just doesn't seem quite on target.
For all of you devotees who keep us constructors in business, here's to a 2015 full of great puzzling!

The initial idea for this theme hit me with the phrase "peters out." But finding some teammates for Peter, along with their baseball actions, took a really long time.
A list of possibilities sat around in my hugely bulky and totally unorganized "ideas" folder for at least a couple years, which is not at all unusual. (And which does have its disadvantages. I can't count the number of times that a percolating theme has shown up in print with someone else's byline.)
Anyway, the lengthy incubation was largely because my various permutations kept coming up short in two ways. First, I really wanted to use WOLF'S DOWN, for Wolf Blitzer, but could never get it to work. And second, I didn't want to have just one woman in the group, which is the way things kept ending up. Finally, I just got tired of seeing this, decided on the current set, and waved it goodbye in November of 2012. But now I see that the whole male-female balancing act was unnecessary because Will changed PAT from Benatar to Sajak, thereby leaving Carrie as the lone female. I never really liked using "Benatar" anyway, so I'm not real surprised at the change.
The clues! I was amazed to go through them. Other than PAT's gender transformation, my clues remained mostly intact, with only a handful of substantive changes. The one that stands out was for STATUTES at 22D. Will's is fun and mine was boring. Thanks, Will!

I submitted this puzzle roughly eight months ago — a pretty quick turnaround these days. Any difficulty in construction resulted from my attempt to fit COLOR in the sequence — but that just wasn't going to work.
I also vacillated a lot as to whether to include BEAUTY PARLOR in the grid. On the one hand, I don't necessarily like to hit solvers over the head with the theme if a revealer isn't needed; I sort of enjoy that aha moment when you suddenly realize what it is. But I also see comments so often from people who say they didn't realize what the theme was, or even that the puzzle had one. So finally, for an early-week puzzle, I decided to put it in — especially since the grid accommodated it so easily. Without those added entries the sides could have had snappier fill, but such are the compromises we have to make.
Sure, clues were changed, but the overall balance seems similar to what I submitted. One clue's demise was predictable: My clue for NPR was "Station that airs the Puzzlemaster."

I think this puzzle started out without anything particular in mind — just playing around with terms meaning "zero" or "nothing." Discovering wurlitZER Organs gave me the slant to take. And linking the theme to Seinfeld — with the reveal a fortuitous 15 letters at that — was my definite aha moment. The crossword gods were smiling.
I thought this would be more fun without circles, requiring solvers to figure out, if they hadn't already, why the puzzle was "about nothing." So I submitted it with Wednesday-ish clues. Will had other ideas, though, and said he wanted it for a Monday with circles. Which meant reclueing. For a Monday level, I tried valiantly to get rid of ANKH in the grid, but it wasn't gonna happen.
This was one I especially enjoyed doing. I hope you all enjoy the final product.

This was a relatively easy puzzle to do once the idea struck. I do remember regretting the need to scrap MONEYBALL, because I didn't want to repeat the B-A-L-L of BALLISTIC — and that was too good to part with. Also, the BALL half would have been too similar to CALL and WALL.
With themes like this, I like it when the pronunciation of the key word(s) changes. That was a plus for RHONE VALLEY, which admittedly rates rather low on the "fun" scale.
I see that Will changed quite a few of the clues, generally making them more straightforward. Yes, it's Monday. His clue redo that I especially like is for 33-Across. A number sequence there definitely has more flair than the "Sitcom, say" clue I submitted.

VIC: I admire Lynn's thematic tautness and deft touch with early-week clues. Always have. In late October 2010 she did a CrosSynergy titled "A Bone to Pick." The title made me think of "with you." as in, "I have a bone to pick with you." Her theme consisted of ILSAs (in-the-language stand-alones), the first unit of which could precede "bone", e.g. TAILWIND and WISH YOU WERE HERE.
My idea was to use "with you" as a reveal, with four partial phrases that could end with those two words. Falling flat, this idea morphed into, first, phrases ending with "you." And then into song titles, and then love song titles. I had trouble making a grid that would accommodate the lengthy theme — a good time to seek help.
Since Lynn had inspired the idea, I asked her if she'd collaborate. Her initial reaction: "Your proposed theme is pretty far afield from a bone to pick!" But she agreed, made a great grid, and wrote the clues. We pitched it to Will as a Valentine's Day special.
