x + y = 16 and x - y = 4, so substituting...
x = 4 + y
y + (4 + y) = 16
y + y = 16 - 4
2y = 12, so y = 6
x + 6 = 16, so x = 10

UPDATE: This solution from reader Dave Reynolds is more elegant:

If you add the left and right sides of both equations you get:
2x = 20 --> x = 10
10 + y = 16 --> y = 6

10 + 6 = 16
10 - 6 = 4
QED.
